How to Pack Small Items for Posting with Grip Seal Bags

If you sell small items online, grip seal bags are one of the simplest ways to keep each order tidy and protected on its way to the customer. This guide covers how to pack small items for posting, step by step, plus ways to save time and money on every order.

Why use grip seal bags for posting?

  • Keeps products together and stops small items getting lost in a larger parcel.
  • Protects against dust and moisture on the way to your customer.
  • Looks tidy and professional when the order is opened.
  • Clear, so you and the customer can see what is inside.
  • Lets you use a smaller parcel, which can help reduce postage costs.

Step by step: how to pack an order

1. Choose the right bag size

Measure the width and height of your item and pick a bag slightly larger, so it slides in easily and the seal closes fully. Not sure which size? See our guide to choosing a size by item or our size chart in millimetres and inches.

2. Make sure the item is clean and dry

Moisture trapped in a sealed bag can cause problems, especially for metal items, so dry everything first.

3. Do not overfill the bag

A bag that is packed too full puts pressure on the seal. Leave a little room so the strip can close along its whole length.

4. Seal it fully

Line up both sides of the seal strip and press from one end to the other. Check the whole strip has closed before you pack the order.

5. Label it

Put a printed card or label inside the bag with the product name or code. If you send several items in one parcel, give each its own bag so nothing gets mixed up when the customer unpacks it.

6. Protect fragile items

A grip seal bag keeps items clean and organised, but it is not cushioning. Wrap fragile items in suitable padding before bagging, and use a padded mailer or box for the parcel itself.

7. Pack the parcel

Put the bagged item in a padded mailer, small box or envelope that is close to its size. A snug parcel moves less in transit.

Choosing sizes for common seller items

Item Suggested bag
Jewellery and findings 30 x 30mm to 60 x 90mm
Phone accessories and small cables 100 x 100mm or 125 x 125mm
Stickers, cards and small prints 150 x 150mm or 200 x 100mm
Small spare parts and fixings 60 x 90mm to 100 x 100mm
Craft and hobby kits 100 x 100mm to 150 x 150mm

Check your carrier's limits

Size and weight limits change, so check your carrier's current rules before you choose how to post an order. A thin, flat parcel can fall into a cheaper service than a bulky one, so it is worth testing.

Saving time on every order

  • Pre-pack popular items in bulk, so orders only need a label.
  • Keep your most-used sizes within reach of the packing table.
  • Use a printed insert or thank-you card in each bag.
  • Buy in larger packs once you know what you use, as the price per bag falls.

Frequently asked questions

Do grip seal bags protect against water?

They are resistant to water, dirt and dust, but they are not a waterproof guarantee. Seal them fully and use a suitable outer package.

Can I use them for returns?

Yes. A clean, undamaged bag works for return items, and the customer can reseal it.

How many should I keep in stock?

Work out how many orders you pack in a month and keep at least a month ahead, plus a margin for busy periods.
